About
In this piece, Jodianne explores the complexity of the typical Black American experience by blurring the lines of familiar struggle, and upward mobility. The subject, a well groomed young girl, calmly plays with her doll which is also well presenting with a similar skin tone. The doll mimics the typical "American doll" look, a symbol of financial stability, and familial security, and the protection of childhood. The young girl uses a comb that is a staple in Black households.
The girl's calm expression shows that she is not struggling to love the dolls coarse hair texture, but embraces it. The subject is secure in both her exposure to stability, and her connection to the Black struggle.
As in most of her paintings, Jodianne uses a solid background, and expressive strokes, to remove contextual influence. The subject is in her own world, and invites the audience into it.
